In 1970, Whirlpool Corporation became the first home appliance manufacturer to open an office of environmental control. Our sustainability strategy today engages nearly every aspect of our business, from materials and processes to product technologies and end-of-life recycling, all aimed at a more sustainable future.
With every product that we design and build, we’re working to provide our building industry partners with sustainable choices for their customers.
Today, our refrigerators are an average 22 percent larger, cost 75 percent less to operate and can be purchased for 35 percent less than the refrigerators built when we first started our sustainability efforts in 1970 – all while using less energy than a 60-watt incandescent light bulb.
All of our refrigerators and freezers also incorporate Honeywell’s Solstice® Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA) – a next-generation insulation-blowing agent that results in a 99.9 percent decrease in global warming potential.
In the laundry room, we introduced the nation’s first ENERGY STAR-rated clothes dryer, as well as a ventless clothes dryer – the Whirlpool® HybridCare™ Heat Pump Dryer – the most efficient dryer ever to be introduced in the U.S. market that also expands laundry room design options.
